Below is my final draft of the cover page for my magazine. There have not been any changes since the last entry I made about it.
After all my many updates and changes, below is my final table of contents for my magazine. The last edit I made was emphasizing the picture, words, and number of the article on my 2 page spread.
This is my final 2-page spread, I added a picture on the first page that my friend Lincoln Le took of his ramen he made that I added a filter on to match my theme more. For the second page, I decided to go with the white background as my theme and have the pictures in the colored boxes. The top picture is also from my friend Lincoln Le and the bottom one is from the a recipe on the blog "Baker by Nature".

The sad truth about the world of media is that large companies and conglomerates are taking over making it harder for independent artists to get the attention they deserve. While this issue plagues all types of media they kind I see most often in my daily life is through music and the music industry. Within the music industry we have seen an emergence of the big guys, or large companies that control the field, in the record companies that produce the music for artists. Some of the world's biggest record labels include, Atlantic Records, Interscope Records, and Warner Music. These companies are extremely large and have many, many famous artists signed to them because of the extensive resources they have and the money they make. Having all this power makes it easy for them to control their signed artists and in turn control the audience who listens to them. With all their money they can easily produce artists' music to be sold on all platforms from the radio to Spotify internationally and reach audiences everywhere. This is one of the biggest advantages of being with the big guys, they have the money and power to make you a global star and have your music be heard everywhere. But, here comes the biggest disadvantage, it is hard to really say that “your” music is completely yours. When you sign a contract the record companies own you and your music and can manipulate it to fit what they want and will lie or do whatever they need to to make more money. With a big guy you lose much of your freedom. One example is pop singer Taylor Swift who quickly rose to fame before joining a record label (Big Machine Records) to grow and have more guidance. It was recently revealed that her label was very controlling and did not give her the freedom she wanted to she left, but at the start it seemed like a good idea because of all the resources and money they had. It is important that artists can still keep their artistic freedom though. Now that we have seen the advantages, disadvantages and examples of the big guys, let’s take a look at the little guys. In this case of music the little guys are independent artists who create their own music at home. Some popular sites for artists to post their work is YouTube or Soundcloud. While these platforms are open for anyone in the world with access to the internet it is sometimes hard to grow an audience since there are so many independent artists out there all trying to grow. This brings us the disadvantage of being a little guy, you do not have access to all the necessary resources or sometimes money to produce your music and distribute it globally. But, one of the biggest and best advantages of being independent is you have complete freedom and control over your work and how it is produced. Also with being independent you are more driven and dedicated to your work and always strive to produce the best for your listeners while big companies just want money. Being independent means you have to compete for your audience with other little guys and the big guys, so most independent artists target local audiences. One example of a small independent artist I found on SoundCloud is heavn, they have a small, local following but their content is available for all people. While they have little followers they still keep grinding and working hard to keep making music they love for their audience. Other more famous artists such as Lizzo and Billie Eilish started on SoundCloud as a little guy but grew famous around the world and eventually signed to label to manage and produce them so they could focus more on being famous and growing. There are also many examples of artists including Chance the Rapper and Frank Ocean that started on SoundCloud and grew to be very famous and well known around the world but never signed a contract to a big record label because they did not want to lose any freedom and control over their music because they know big lakes don't care about individual artists. Big and Little guys all have their disadvantages on the artists and production so, it is important to consider the people you support. Diversity and Cultural Citizenship-
This section focuses on the immense diversity YouTube has as a platform and how it encourages this diversity. Like most social media platforms, YouTube is free and available to all people around the world and easy to use. In order to post videos on the site the only two requirements you really need are a camera and access to wifi, this means it does not matter your race, sexuality, economic class, etc you can have equal access to this app. This is an amazing thing because it is one of the few places where people can still be themselves and post what they want, as well as view videos and posts by other people that are similar to them. When scrolling on the YouTube explore page it is easy to see the diversity they promote among people. It also allows for cultural expression where people can take pride in representing who they are and be that role model for others. Not only is there diversity and inclusion among creators but, there is also a variety of videos that can be found on YouTube from a baking tutorial to someone sharing their coming out story. As long it is within the community guidelines of appropriateness it can be found on YouTube. This is essential into helping provide a space for people to share their ideas and stories as well as a place to inspire those watching the videos. Having this diversity and inclusivity amount creators and videos is what makes YouTube the great platform it is. Globalisation and Localisation- As we talked about in the last section, YouTube is available to everyone in the world as long as they have access to the internet. This leads to one major thing, globalization! Globalization is the process in which businesses or products start spreading around the world to where they have an international influence/presence. YouTube has been quickly globalized around the world as it is now one of the most popular apps. One important factor in this is the spread and sharing of ideas from one country to another. This reminds me of trends and how quick something from Britain can come to the United States. This spread of ideas is due to the diversity. There are also some trends that stay in the country making YouTube slightly different all around the world. This idea of making “different YouTubes” around the world stems from the process of localization. Opposite of globalization, localization refers to restricting something to only be in a local area or place. In other words ideas and videos are not spread all around the world. An example of this is genre of videos that may only be relevant to one ethnicity, so only people of that same ethnicity watch the videos and therefore they become popular and localized to that ethnicity. This is not necessarily because of something YouTube does, since they try to remain diverse but, rather this is a result of users and preferences they have for videos. Both globalization and localization have their benefits and consequences and one is not better than the other rather, they are both important to building YouTube as a platform and shaping viewers. YouTube as Cultural Archive- One important thing to understand about the Internet is that stuff you post is there forever and one place you can always find old clips is YouTube. YouTube is home to millions old movie clips, music videos, speeches, TV shows / commercials and many more. These videos on here will be there forever, this means that with the click of a button me or even my grandparents can find an old video that we have been looking for. In other words you can think of YouTube as an archive or even display from a museum where people can go to moments from their past. This is truly an amazing opportunity where people can not only go and watch these old videos and segments, but people can also post their own videos to later look back on in life or show generations to come. It is important that we have this platform to use as an archive so we can save and look back at what we have in the world. This means we can forever reflect on the diversity, inclusivity, globalization, and localization all fostered on YouTube. It may be weird to think that a silly social media platform is what is documenting our world as we know it for future historians to see but the truth is that is we will be able to look at our world from all different perspectives. Only I think it is important we get rid of the notification around social media including YouTube so people don't think it's just another silly kids app rather people start using it and respecting it for the opportunities it provides. For my last picture on my table of contents I obviously wanted to have it be a picture of homemade pickles since that is the article topic but, I had a very hard time taking the pictures myself so, I decided to keep my original picture I put in as a "place holder" because I really like how the magazine looked as it was. I got this picture a while back when I came across a cooking blog with a recipe for homemade pickles that had plenty of pictures, I took the picture and added it into my table of contents. Picture Source- Pickle on Table of ContentsThe blog where I got the picture from is called "A Spicy Perspective".
It was posted on July 23, 2019 by the author of the blog, Sommer Collier. LINK: https://www.aspicyperspective.com/best-homemade-refrigerator-pickles/ In my last update where I added the picture I also made some small changes to the format itself that I wanted to put in a separate post so I could focus on the picture changes first them address the others. I decided to lighten the background a little bit by choosing a shade of grey that was a few shades lighter. I feel this matches the front better and is less dark. I also made the words "Table of Contents" bigger to draw more attention.
I used VSCO to edit the previous picture from Lincoln Le and put it into my Table of Contents. I really like how the picture looks in here!
I had a hard time deciding on what kind of image I wanted to represent my main article on my table of contents because the image I used on the 2 page spread looked weird when in a circle but, then I saw my friend Lincoln Le post about another mean he made and it was perfect for my Table of Contents. Below is the picture I want to use. I will edit it and add it to my page in the next post.
